  1. “It intrigues me even more because, even on a daily basis I — pardon my French — hate this fucking sport, but on the same token, I love it — ya know what I mean? I guess right now the main reason I continue to lift is because I know I got a lot more in me.”

Could not agree more. What do we say after a good lifting session? Why, we say: “today was not a bad day!”

  2. I use the ‘pull the head of the lion’ quote on a nearly daily basis.

  3. A master is he who lives without fear

  4. If you don’t want to be lunch, you’ll go maximum everyday.

  5. Shankle is the man, love watching california strength videos on youtube when I’m supposed to be working

And nice work 6:30 am class!! That was a long one

  6. Something about him rubs me the wrong way. He seems condescending, arrogant, deliberately fake-casual. Maybe he’s different in person, but on video I can’t say I like ANYTHING he says. He reminds me of the people I ran into all the time at Gold’s or other gyms — and that is the reason I stopped going those places. I can’t stand the atmosphere.

I like Crossfit precisely because it’s the opposite. There are some extremely accomplished athletes but they are completely unpretentious. There is a friendly air of competition and encouragement. I feel motivated to push myself to get stronger like the people around me are, but not belittled because I’m a skinny twerp. I’m doing squats and I drop the bar, and Walden offers to help me rack it again. I’m struggling with overhead squats and Chris points out that my arms are too far back, but he makes me feel good about learning better form, not bad about having bad form. I know it’s more than just the people — I suspect if you put Walden or Chris in a different environment their interactions might feel different to me — but whatever the magic recipe is, it all comes together to create something good.

I don’t get the feeling that Mr. Shankle would make me feel this way, but as I said he might be different in person. So I don’t have any favorite quotes from the video.

    1. Baron, I totally get what you mean, but here’s some food for thought. Donny Shankle is not only the top US weightlifter right now, but he also blogs about Bible verses: http://donnyshankle.blogspot.com/

      1. annnnd he lifts with Jon North. If you want to talk about a guy with a big head, talk about him (or Kendrick Fariss, aka self-described “King of the Platform”). If it means anything, I’ve heard that Shankle is actually a really nice guy in person (would love to find out for myself…), and doesn’t ever give off the attitude that he’s better than you or anyone else simply because he can lift more. He just wants to be better tomorrow than he was yesterday.

      2. I checked out more info about him online. Clearly a great lifter. I’ll reserve my opinion from here out until I meet him in person 🙂

  7. same quote as Corie’s, love it.
    WOD (with Mike): 38:26? (45# OHS/PS)

  8. 30:01 with Emily.
    Subs: FS @ 35, PU/BB, Gob. Squat@35, 20″ box(step down), Push Up for burpees.

This was fun and not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Took some ibuprofen after and iced/heat my back bc it was a killer. Feels okay though.

  9. That should say 38:01, not 30:01

  10. 35:11 (with Katelyn)
    35# OHS/PS, 25# KB
And a big thanks to Katelyn for pushing me through my first full workout after a long Crossfit hiatus… Really fun!

    1. Thanks for being my partner!

I did the same time but at 55# OHS/PS, 35# KB

  11. And thanks to Chris too! 🙂

    1. Glad you’re back Courteney! Huge mega props to Jenni and the noon class for dealing with my tardiness… burpees for me! Nice job on the super-long workout today.

For those of you that don’t know about Egyptian Hypnosis, here is a link. Corie and I have mastered this technique but use it sparingly due to the ambiguity of its legality…but don’t test us.
